There was a real buzz in Houston, Texas over the weekend of March 8-9 when delegates gathered to consider How to Think about Jesus.
Very enjoyable and enlightening.
I could have attended for days!
These are just two examples of the positive and enthusiastic feedback received.
Co-sponsored by the Friends of Wycliffe Hall and Church of St John the Divine, this forum guided participants to a deeper understanding of one of the most intriguing, perplexing, appealing, troubling, controversial and influential figures in history - Jesus.
Over a 2-day programme that began with Morning Prayer, delegates enjoyed 8 speaker sessions by 4 Wycliffe academics:
- Rt Revd Prof NT Wright - a historian and New Testament scholar, who has spent a lifetime studying Jesus in his first-century context;
- Revd Dr Suse McBay - a pastor and expert in the Judaism of Jesus’ day;
- Revd Dr Michael Lloyd - Principal of Wycliffe Hall;
- Revd Dr Jonathan Brant - who directs the New Renaissance Project at Wycliffe and has a special interest in the theology of culture and the arts.
Together they explored an intruiging range of themes including:
- The Image in the Temple: from Cosmos to Christos (Wright)
- Beginning with Moses and All the Prophets: Jesus as the fulfillment of the Old Testament (McBay)
- A Demonstration of the Messias: Jesus in the theology of Handel (Lloyd)
- Reel Saviour: How to think about Jesus by reflecting on movies (Brant)
Matthew Armstrong, Wycliffe's Director of External Relations, travelled out for the event. He says: "We thank all who attended, volunteered, and supported the Forum and look forward to returning soon.”
