Mark Turner is new Bursar

September 2025

New in post this month is Mark Turner, who as Wycliffe Hall’s Bursar will assume strategic responsibility for the Hall’s finances as well as legal, governance and support services.

Mark brings a wealth of professional experience coupled with a strong Christian vocation and a passion for the Hall’s vision and ethos.

Previously the Bursar at Birkenhead School in the Wirral for 13 years, Mark has spent the past year as a theology student in the Wycliffe community before joining the staff team.

Originally graduating in Law from Magdalen College, Oxford, Mark developed a career in the Police Service (West Mercia). This saw him, for example, leading Criminal Justice Support over three counties, becoming Divisional Commander for Herefordshire and bringing two police forces together in a strategic alliance. For much of his 20 years’ service, he also co-ordinated his organisation's Christian Police Fellowship.

Mark Turner says:

“I’m looking forward to rising to the many challenges of the Bursar role, and even more to enabling the opportunities available for people at Wycliffe Hall.”

“Through my recent studies at Wycliffe, I’ve been fortunate to experience this rich and varied community living and learning together in worship. This has built on a strong affinity with the Hall’s mission, and an understanding of our people - those who benefit from the Hall’s work and those who make it possible.”

“I’ve always seen my Christian calling as having a professional dimension. This has led me to serving communities in a variety of Police roles, within a school context and now in support of a scholarly community where I hope and pray that I may fulfil God’s intention for me – and help others do the same.”

“Policing is about people and relationships as much as it is about justice and preventing harm. The learning I bring from my police leadership roles is that, while I’m grateful to have considerable experience in governance, policy, procedure and finance, I intend my approach to be practical and ‘human’, valuing those involved and affected.”

In terms of church involvement, Mark has been a Treasurer, Churchwarden, youth group leader and (with his wife Siân) a fellowship group leader. He has enjoyed playing, umpiring, coaching (and now mostly watching) cricket; he also enjoys music …..and has a variety of Playstations.
