Dr Sarah C. Williams
Sarah Williams is an Oxford trained historian who taught as part of the Modern History Faculty at the University of Oxford before moving to Canada to teach the history of Christianity to international post-graduates at Regent College, Vancouver. Her research centres on the relationship between cultural and religious history, missiology and political philosophy. She is a gifted teacher, writer and communicator devoted to telling the story of the church to diverse audiences all over the world. She is well-known for bringing history to life in a way that speaks to our contemporary context.
Sarah Williams studied Modern History as an undergraduate at Trinity College, Oxford. After receiving a BA, she was made Senior Scholar at Merton College obtaining her DPhil on late-nineteenth-century popular religion in 1993. After a period of theological immersion at Regent College, Canada she undertook three years of post-doctoral research in the Theology Department at Birmingham University. In 1998, she returned to Oxford as Fellow and Tutor in Modern History at Harris Manchester College and subsequently Praelector at Lincoln College. At Oxford, she taught British and European political and cultural history from 1685 to 1939 and supervised graduates working on nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century religious culture in the British context. In 2005, she moved to Canada with her family to teach at Regent College. She now lives back in the UK returning regularly to teach in Regent’s Summer Programs whilst focusing on speaking, writing and research. She is a Research Professor in the History of Christianity at Regent College and Senior Research Fellow at Wycliffe Hall.
