A state-of-the art new home for Oxford’s Theology and Religion faculty and library

October 2025

The large number of Wycliffe Hall students who have at least some of their lectures hosted by the Faculty of Theology and Religion are now benefitting from a purpose-built space in the midst of a major new humanities investment in the heart of Oxford.

Justyn Terry, Wycliffe Hall Vice Principal and Theology and Religion faculty member, says:

“The University of Oxford is really investing in the Humanities in a way that many other universities currently are not. Seeing Theology, alongside other subjects, elevated by brand new facilities of this calibre reflects the vigorous health of theological teaching, learning, research and collaboration here at Oxford. The Schwarzman Centre is a really significant development, offering a fantastic student experience.”

The Faculty of Theology and Religion – which had previously been housed in a converted hospital building – now has its lecture theatres, seminar rooms, library and offices in an elegantly architected, state-of-the-art, purpose-built centre.

Under one remarkable roof, academia and culture will break a new kind of common ground. The Schwarzman Centre brings together seven humanities faculties (including Theology and Religion), along with the world-class Bodleian Humanities library and a vibrant cultural programme. With spaces for concerts, exhibitions, film screenings and public events, it will be a hub where students, researchers, artists and audiences can come together to explore, question, create and connect.

Co-locating academic teaching facilities for Oxford students and staff with world class research and performance spaces aims to bring together leading figures from different disciplines to harness the power of the humanities to address the major challenges of today’s society.
