Wycliffe Hall wins Gold Award for sustainability

This summer, Wycliffe Hall was awarded Gold status in the Green Impact Awards 2026. 

Green Impact is a programme that helps public sector organisations, including universities, on their journey towards greater sustainability. Seven Oxford colleges were awarded Gold status this year.

The plaque we were awarded was made by the University joiners from local reclaimed wood – it was once a bookshelf in the archives beneath the Examination Schools!

Recent sustainability progress

Last year, Wycliffe was awarded Silver status, so we are very proud of all the hard work put in by our Green Impact team, headed up by Nick from the Bursary team and current student Gemma. Thanks to them, since 2024, Wycliffe Hall has reduced its food waste by 30% and its general waste by 25%.

We now compost all our uncooked kitchen waste on site and use the compost on the college flower borders and rose beds. We have also installed several bird nesting boxes around the grounds and we were delighted to see them in use this spring.

We believe we should be setting an example and leading the way in caring for creation. There are still more changes we can make to improve biodiversity on the college grounds and become more sustainable. One small thing we are doing right now is building new leaf mould compost bins.
