Are you in a Christian leadership role - or preparing to step into one?

May the Lord use it to help leaders lead faithfully, fruitfully and joyfully through all the phases of leadership.

So says Revd Dr Justyn Terry, of his book The Five Phases of Leadership, which was nominated September 2024's Book of the Month by the publisher, Langham Literature.

The Five Phases of Leadership was written to prepare anyone about to take on a significant leadership responsibility anticipate what might lie ahead, and also to help experienced leaders stand back and see where they are on the leadership journey, recognising where they have come from and working out where to go next.

The book particularly has church and ministry leaders in mind, but the five phases - establishing trust, cultivating leaders, discerning vision, implementing plans, and transitioning out - have much wider relevance to Christians and others in leadership roles.

Justyn Terry says:

The book was created by a practitioner for practitioners, and seeks to draw together the wisdom of the scriptures, and from those who have written on Christian leadership or who have studied leadership from other perspectives."

"My hope is that it brings together what can seem very disparate elements of leadership into a more coherent whole, so that leaders can get a sense of how leadership generally works and where the resources are to help equip them in their vital role."

"I hope it will prove useful to those in, or preparing for, leadership, whether they read it in printed text or hear it as an audio book."

The Five Phases of Leadership began life as lectures and talks about leadership drawing on Justyn's six years leading a church in London and eight years leading a theological college in Pittsburgh, USA, which he was encouraged to write up as a book.

Justyn's material is also being made available as a leadership training course for use in many contexts including churches and Christian ministries.

Rt. Revd. Jill Duff (DPhil), Anglican Bishop of Lancaster, UK, said:

I cannot recommend Justyn Terry’s book highly enough for anyone in leadership. In an age which idolizes leadership and leadership books and formulae, this is refreshingly authentic. Terry is an insightful teacher and practitioner, rooted in Scripture and the need for the fruit of the Spirit and Christ-like character formation. Read it!

Most Revd. Dr. Mouneer Hanna Anis, Archbishop, Episcopal Anglican Diocese of Egypt, said:

"It is not a book that can be read just once, but it is one that needs to be read again and again as it helps leaders to evaluate themselves continuously.

Revd Dr Justyn Terry, Vice Principal and Academic Dean of Wycliffe Hall
