An incredible week of learning at Summer School 2025

 September 2025

While our students have been on vacation, Wycliffe Hall has brought its vibrant educational mission to wider audiences, most recently at the flagship event, the annual Summer School.

For a week in September, a capacity crowd of international delegates came together to explore the theme of ‘Undoing the Spell: C.S. Lewis and the Undeceiving of our Generation’. An immersive programme blended first-class scholarship with cultural touchpoints; daily worship with excursions to Lewis landmarks; warm hospitality and animated conversations with time to pray and reflect.

Highlights included a packed auditorium for talks by Alister McGrath, Simon Horobin and other leaders in their fields; a visit to Lewis’ Oxford home of The Kilns; and a Gala Dinner at Magdalen College.

Stimulating, inspiring, energising and thought-provoking are sentiments that we’ve been hearing in feedback. Delegates have commented:

  • It was a marvellous week full of inspiration and challenge for each of us
  • The question and answer sessions after each lecture were a particular highlight, full of engaging and stimulating discussions with world-class experts
  • A highlight for me was hearing the incredible depth of the lectures, especially Simon [Horobin] speaking about the mythology that C.S. Lewis drew upon to bring Christ into focus in his work. It’s been phenomenal to cast a vision for how we can impact culture in our day.

The theme ‘Undoing the Spell’ draws on a C.S. Lewis metaphor, and it’s a spell that Wycliffe Hall’s vision for a new Christian-led Renaissance aims to help break. This Summer School gave participants a wide range of perspectives on how Lewis – as both a scholar and creative writer – might help us individually, and as a wider society, to foster uplifting belief in a loss-reversing future.
